Russia considers imposing 5% import tariff on e-cigarette equipment
8 November 2023
According to a report by Russian News Govoritmoskva on October 16, the Russian Federation’s Audit Chamber recommended imposing a 5% import tariff on e-cigarette equipment. This is set out in the department’s conclusions on the draft federal budget for 2024-2026.
MP Sultan Hamzaev (Султан Хамзаев) clarified the reasons behind this proposal. He pointed out that this is just a measure to regulate the market for such products. He emphasized that the current price standard of 150-200 rubles for e-cigarette equipment that is harmful to health is too low, and he even advocated that their sales should be completely banned.
Hamzaev said: "I think the tax rate may eventually be raised to 30-40%. Our goal is to make these e-cigarette devices no longer so easy to obtain. At present, we have seen the devastation of these devices, from Starting with the explosions, and with our incomplete understanding of the specific chemical components contained in them, I favor a complete ban."
The Audit Chamber of the Russian Federation concluded that import duties on e-cigarettes and accessories could bring an additional 1.5 billion rubles to the budget if import volumes remain at last year's levels.
